U.S. music impresario Don Cornelius, whose TV show Soul Train helped expose music acts like Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder to millions of Americans, died Wednesday of a gunshot wound, police said. He was 75.

Soul Train featured stars like James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight and Whitney Houston, and helped propel the careers of up-and-comers like Luther Vandross.

TMZ reported Wednesday that when Cornelius divorced his wife in 2009, he told a Los Angeles judge that he had “significant health issues” and wanted to “finalize this divorce before I die.” Soul Train aired continuously until 2006, and the show made claims in later years that it was the longest-running nationally syndicated program in television history.

Here is a small video clip of The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) from the Wed January 18th, 2012 concert which was part of two SOLD OUT shows @ the Turret on the Wilfrid Laurier Campus.

Big huge shout to Phil for making this happen!!! The Weeknd did not disappoint with a strong performance singing tracks from all three mixtapes and I have to admit I was surprised to find out that this show was ONLY his 6th LIVE performance EVER!!!!!!

Pretty impressive for an artist who has been high praise since 2011 from writers @ MTV, Rolling Stone and got a track played on the hit HBO series ‘Entourage’.

To make it even sweeter word is that he just got booked for the massive music festival Coachella in April.

So it was a treat to see this talented act in such a small venue and with the way his career is going it may be the last.

The Australian electronic artist Nick Bertke, better known as Pogo, records sounds from his favourite games and movies, and piece them together like a jigsaw puzzle to create completely new music.

Pogo has videos that have collected over 40 million views on YouTube, and has produced remixes for Disney Pixar, Microsoft, Showtime, the United Nations and more. Also he is known for mixing movies (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Up“) and the entire world into song.

Here is a fresh take on a crowd-favorite “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” titled “Jaaam.” Highlights include Dr. Phil busting a move, Jeffrey saying “Arnold Schwarzenegger,” and of course, signature dance steps from Will and Carlton.

Last we heard from Pogo, he was remixing the Bhutanese people as part of his “Remix the World” project, so this is a move back to his pop culture-driven work.

Download the mixes here

The 20-year-old singer-songwriter (real name: Abel Tesfaye) from Toronto is on the forefront of an idiosyncratic new cut of R&B. Thanks in part to support from fellow Toronto native Drake, he’s been in heavy rotation since 2011 with the release of his mixtape debut “House of Balloons”

This album is a part of a trilogy which includes “Thursday” and “Echoes of Silence”.
Footage was released earlier today on Neptunes fan site TheNeptunes.org of Grammy Award-winning producer Pharrell Williams recording with the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music’s H.M.I. Orchestra, on a new theme titled “I Am Other.”

Between a plethora of creative projects and visits around the world, Pharrell manages to step back into his primary domain of music. Partnering with the University of Miami Frost School of Music and the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra, Williams works his musical magic over a “mixed-genre orchestral work—which features soft and ethereal atmospheres contrasted with fortissimo brass themes and driving rhythms—to explore a different side of his musical creativity, and to encourage his hip-hop fan base to expand their musical horizons.”

From the big screen to the TV screen, club floor to Grammy stage, the 39-year-old rapper, Common, embodies every bit of what it means to be a Renaissance man. Coming off his first successful publication, a memoir entitled, “One Day It’ll All Make Sense” and the launch of his television acting career with AMCs Hell on Wheels, the critically acclaimed artist recently stepped back into the studio to cook up his latest album, The Dreamer, The Believer, slated for a December 20th release. With plenty to discuss, Common sits down with online lifestyle magazine, Interview, to divulge what makes him so awesomely cool. Touching on topics like his friendship with the late J. Dilla, acting endeavors, and a track on his new album referencing the softer side of hip hop, this brief interview is a must read, no matter what art you prefer from the talented Chicagoan. Check out the full article through Interview Magazine.

Did you act when you were growing up?
I acted when I was young—there was one play that I did. I felt I did well, but I remember my mother raving over my friend’s performance [instead]. I kinda lost my faith at that point in acting, and I had interest in other things. I loved plays, I loved films, but I had no desire to act until I had just put out my album Like Water for Chocolate. Creatively, I felt like I’d hit a ceiling, and I needed something else to express myself, and I just decided to take acting classes. The first opportunity that came up was with Girlfriends—someone that I work with was just talking about that, saying, “See how far you’ve come, from Girlfriends to Hell On Wheels. We’re very proud of you!”

But you’ve also done some acting in your videos.
Yeah. Technically, my first acting job was in one of my videos for a song called “Retrospect For Life,” which Lauryn Hill directed and featured an actress by the name of N’bushe Wright, who played my girlfriend who was about to be pregnant. I remember being so nervous about it, but now I feel like I can conquer the world with it. I got a long way to go—I want to keep growing, but it’s something that I’m very into.

What made you decide that it was time for you to write a memoir? You’re quite young.
I felt like I had experienced a lot of things in the first chapter of my life, and I wanted it to inspire and motivate people, so I just started writing.

There’s a part in the book where you talk about living with J Dilla.
Yeah, we had an apartment together in LA. It was incredible to have J Dilla in your dining room making beats—it was one of the greatest experiences I’ve had. I used to get really, really excited when I was getting a JD beats CD. But to have that access and see him create things live every day. There were times when he was sick and couldn’t work as much, but every time he was able to, he would work. He loved music.

What do you think made him so special?
God gifted him with that talent, and then he just loved it so much—he was born to be that creative. One thing that allowed him to continue to be special was that he wasn’t controlled by the industry. He didn’t care if it was the popular rapper calling him or the label telling him they wanted something, he really did stay focused on the music. He had a unique perspective—he was brought up in the hood in Detroit, but he was into jazz music, and sampling Bobby Caldwell and people like that. He had a wide variety of information and talent.

Named after lead singer and songwriter Mark Foster, Californian trio Foster the People chewed up the charts this year after the band’s contagious, up-beat anthem ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ got everyone whistling and head bobbing along.

Mark Pontius, Cubbie Fink and Mark Foster are living the dream. Currently coming to the end of their first international tour, the lads will soon be touching down in LA to take time off for Christmas, before embarking on the second leg of their travels across South East Asia and South America. Playing back to back gigs whilst working on new material, Foster the People are in huge demand after the band’s debut album Torches topped the US charts and their first single ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ went platinum twice over. Writing alternatively orientated music about the state of society and the backlash that selfish political actions can have upon today’s youth, Mark Foster addresses current issues through up-beat music. Unique and ironic, his approach to making a stand and having a voice is melodic and massively pleasing to the ear. If only all protests could sound as sweet. Discussing his creative processes, Mark explained “When I write, a lot of the time it’s free association, I just start riffing stuff and things that are subconsciously going on inside of me will start coming out lyrically and I’ll focus in on it and it’s very therapeutic. I notice a lot of similar themes start coming out.”

Citing this year’s gigs at Glastonbury, Lapalooza and Coachella as the highlights of their career, 2011 took Foster the People from obscure proximities to award-winning heights. The boys peeked down from their ivory towers to tell us what we can expect to hear from their corner in 2012.
