NEW RIP Don Cornelius

U.S. music impresario Don Cornelius, whose TV show Soul Train helped expose music acts like Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder to millions of Americans, died Wednesday of a gunshot wound, police said. He was 75.

Soul Train featured stars like James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight and Whitney Houston, and helped propel the careers of up-and-comers like Luther Vandross.

TMZ reported Wednesday that when Cornelius divorced his wife in 2009, he told a Los Angeles judge that he had “significant health issues” and wanted to “finalize this divorce before I die.” Soul Train aired continuously until 2006, and the show made claims in later years that it was the longest-running nationally syndicated program in television history.

Honey Jam: Then & Now is a reunion concert and photo exhibit showcasing iconic images from the past 16 years of Honey Jam, the longest-running talent showcase in Canada. Many notable artists, including Nelly Furtado, Jully Black and Divine Brown, are just some of Honey Jam’s past alumni.

Hosted by Michie Mee, the event will feature Honey Jam alumni performing tribute songs while paying homage to inspiring black female artists. An accompanying slide show will feature iconic photos, interviews, video highlights, press clippings, flyers, ticket stubs and other memorabilia from 1995 to present. Featured artists include Jemeni, Belinda Brady, DJ Melboogie, Kellylee Evans, Kim Davis, True, Motion, Eternia, Natasha Waterman, Saidah Baba Talibah and more!

Concert Recap: The Weeknd @ WLU

Here is a small video clip of The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) from the Wed January 18th, 2012 concert which was part of two SOLD OUT shows @ the Turret on the Wilfrid Laurier Campus.

Big huge shout to Phil for making this happen!!! The Weeknd did not disappoint with a strong performance singing tracks from all three mixtapes and I have to admit I was surprised to find out that this show was ONLY his 6th LIVE performance EVER!!!!!!

Pretty impressive for an artist who has been high praise since 2011 from writers @ MTV, Rolling Stone and got a track played on the hit HBO series ‘Entourage’.

To make it even sweeter word is that he just got booked for the massive music festival Coachella in April.

So it was a treat to see this talented act in such a small venue and with the way his career is going it may be the last.

Jim B & Mike L out, Thorsten Heins is the new CEO of RIM

Research In Motion leaders Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis are stepping down as executives and co-chairmen of the board in the biggest shakeup in the history of the Waterloo, Ont.-based start-up turned global smartphone giant. The sudden move follows a year of decline in which RIM lost three-quarters of its market value, botched the launch of its PlayBook tablet and watched rivals eat into the BlackBerry’s market share.

In the most dramatic change since the company was founded 27 years ago, the new chief executive will be Thorsten Heins. Recruited by Mr. Balsillie and Mr. Lazaridis five years ago, he came to be a trusted adviser and their hand-picked successor. Barbara Stymiest replaces Mr. Balsillie and Mr. Lazaridis as chair of the board of directors

Calls for radical change at the company have been mounting in recent months. Its BlackBerry device blazed the trail for smartphones and has 75 million active subscribers around the world, but RIM has struggled of late with dwindling market share and fierce competition from Apple Inc.’s iPhone and an array of devices running Google Inc.’s Android operating system.

The catalyst for change appears to have been the entry of a new personality: reserved but revered investor Prem Watsa, CEO of Fairfax Financial. Mr. Watsa, who has been called Canada’s Warren Buffett for his business acumen, has been quietly buying RIM stock for some time. Fairfax is now one of RIM’s largest shareholders, and Mr. Watsa is being appointed to the company’s board of directors after playing a role in key discussions in recent weeks.

Critics of the company’s performance may not be immediately impressed by a management shakeup that involves so little fresh blood. Mr. Heins, a former executive at Siemens, is simply moving up the ranks, while Ms. Stymiest, who once headed stock market operator TSX Group, has been a director since 2007. But RIM’s new leadership – including Mr. Watsa, Mr. Heins and Ms. Stymiest – suggested in interviews with The Globe and Mail on Sunday that they are content with the company’s strategic direction and products.

“There’s no need for me to shake this company up or turn it upside down,” Mr. Heins said at RIM’s Waterloo headquarters. “We are not at a point where we try to define a strategy. That’s done.”

Mr. Balsillie and Mr. Lazaridis have been grooming Mr. Heins as a successor for some time and say they decided to act as the company enters a new phase. RIM’s newest BlackBerry 7 devices are now out in the market, its PlayBook tablet is receiving a software revamp in February and its next-generation operating system – BlackBerry 10, which is meant to save the company – is launching later this year.

“Jim and I approached the board and we told them that the time is now,” Mr. Lazaridis said.

The board agreed, both with that decision and the suggestion from Mr. Balsillie and Mr. Lazaridis that Mr. Heins was the best candidate for the role of CEO. In addition, the directors decided to try to recruit Mr. Watsa, a prominent and respected outsider, at a time when the company was under fire for a co-CEO, co-chair governance structure that critics felt was contributing to RIM’s growing problems.

Mr. Lazaridis and Mr. Watsa were introduced in 2009 by David Johnston, who is now Canada’s Governor-General but at the time was the long-standing president of the University of Waterloo.

CHUNE: POGO remixes ‘The Fresh Prince’

The Australian electronic artist Nick Bertke, better known as Pogo, records sounds from his favourite games and movies, and piece them together like a jigsaw puzzle to create completely new music.

Pogo has videos that have collected over 40 million views on YouTube, and has produced remixes for Disney Pixar, Microsoft, Showtime, the United Nations and more. Also he is known for mixing movies (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Up“) and the entire world into song.

Here is a fresh take on a crowd-favorite “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” titled “Jaaam.” Highlights include Dr. Phil busting a move, Jeffrey saying “Arnold Schwarzenegger,” and of course, signature dance steps from Will and Carlton.

Last we heard from Pogo, he was remixing the Bhutanese people as part of his “Remix the World” project, so this is a move back to his pop culture-driven work.

The Weeknd LIVE in Waterloo for 2 SOLD OUT shows @ WLU

The 20-year-old singer-songwriter (real name: Abel Tesfaye) from Toronto is on the forefront of an idiosyncratic new cut of R&B. Thanks in part to support from fellow Toronto native Drake, he’s been in heavy rotation since 2011 with the release of his mixtape debut “House of Balloons”

This album is a part of a trilogy which includes “Thursday” and “Echoes of Silence”. The song “High for This” was featured in the promo for the final season of the HBO show Entourage On June 16, 2011, “House of Balloons” was named as a longlisted nominee for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize.

On July 6, the album was named as one of ten shortlisted nominees. In December, The Weeknd released his highly anticipated third album “Echoes of Silence”. The Weeknd’s site crashed shortly after due to the large number of downloads.

Since hitting the scene, The Weeknd has received praise from a number of musical publications, including those of MTV, BET, Rolling Stone, XXL, The Source and 2DopeBoyz, who have all dubbed him the “Songbird of his Generation”, as well as the “best musical talent since Michael Jackson” (John Norris, MTV).

The Weeknd’s two shows SOLD OUT in less than two hours. Due to the high demand of the event, The Weeknd will be performing two nights in a row in Waterloo on January 18 & 19 @ the Turret Nightclub inside the Wilfred Laurier University.

Footage was released earlier today on Neptunes fan site TheNeptunes.org of Grammy Award-winning producer Pharrell Williams recording with the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music’s H.M.I. Orchestra, on a new theme titled “I Am Other.”

Between a plethora of creative projects and visits around the world, Pharrell manages to step back into his primary domain of music. Partnering with the University of Miami Frost School of Music and the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra, Williams works his musical magic over a “mixed-genre orchestral work—which features soft and ethereal atmospheres contrasted with fortissimo brass themes and driving rhythms—to explore a different side of his musical creativity, and to encourage his hip-hop fan base to expand their musical horizons.”

Growing up as a kid on the east coast watching the Pistons, Knicks and Raptors I have to admit I’m not the ultimate Kobe fan but this new Nike ad is brilliant. The Black Mamba has probably some of the best Nike Basketball ads since the days of Jordan.

This latest spot sings the praises of the KobeSystem and its ability to help the successful find even more success. Aziz Ansari and Paul Rodriguez aren’t the only ones on the KobeSystem – just about everyone else who matters appears to be under the influence of the Black Mamba as well. From sports stars like Jerry Rice and Landon Donovan to media mogul Richard Branson and even Kanye West.

Jay-Z & Beyonce welcome a new baby girl “B.I.C”

Congrats to Jay Z & Beyonce for giving birth to their new baby girl, Blue Ivy Carter.

Sources say that Blue stands for The Blue Print album of Jay Z and IV is significant to their relationship in the past—Beyoncé’s birthday is Sept. 4, Jay-Z’s is Dec. 4, they married on April 4 (the fourth day of the fourth month) in 2008, B’s latest album is entitled 4, and they even have matching Roman numeral tattoos on their wedding fingers which is the number 4.

The world has been eagerly awaiting on the birth of Beyonce and Hova’s baby ever since she sent a Twitter shock all around the world during the VMA’s last year! It was the baby bump heard ’round the world!

Upon welcoming his newborn baby girl into the world over the weekend, proud father Jay-Z lets loose a new track titled “Glory,” seemingly dedicated to B.I.C., Blue Ivy Carter. The single highlights Pharrell Williams on the hook, as Hov spits several bars directed at he and Beyoncé’s prized little one. Stream the track below.

This is a small glimpse in to what went down November 10th, 2011 featuring performances from The Get By show @ Starlight. The Get By is made up of Justis, Mantis, and Pangea Delphi with two of the members coming back their hometown – Waterloo, ON. I got a chance to see them for the first time LIVE and man I was not disappointed!!!

The show also featured Tona, Tanika Charles, and Jared Bellenie of Ace Kinkaid. Also a performance by Pocket City. The album features Shad, Saukrates, Rich Kidd, Tona, Tanika Charles, Promise, MFP, Fraction, GMF, and Rufus JohnMusic, Love, and Hijinks.

MTV’s prank show Punk’d is BACK in March

When MTV mutated from a music tv channel to a reality soap channel we were certainly not very excited. One of the very few shows that we did check out every once in a while was Punk’d. During its New Year’s Eve program, MTV revealed that a new season of the celebrity hidden-camera series will premiere on March 19, 2012.

Ashton Kutcher will no longer be the host of the show, instead there will be a series of guest hosts, including Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Kellan Lutz, Bam Margera and Dax Shepard.

“Unlike the original series, the new Punk’d will also offer a behind-the-scenes look at how the elaborate pranks were put together. Punk’d is executive produced by the show’s co-creators, Katalyst’s Jason Goldberg and Kutcher.”

If the new show will be worth watching, we cannot tell you yet. We will all have to wait and see in March.
